GA Legal Aid shares nomination for Best Law Web Site, "Webby Awards" LOCAL WEBSITE PUTS ATLANTA ON THE MAP
LegalAid-GA.org Shares Nomination for Best Law Website by the Prestigious Webby Awards – for 2nd Year in a Row!
ATLANTA, GA (April 21, 2008) – The Webby Awards, hailed as the “Oscars of the Internet” by the New York Times, nominated LawHelp.org for Best Law Website of 2008. LegalAid-GA.org is among the site’s affiliates, which serves as a clearinghouse for state legal information.
Choosing the best of the best is not an easy task. The 12th Annual Webby Awards received nearly 10,000 entries from more than 60 countries and all 50 states. LegalAid-GA.org, a project of the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, was created to provide Georgia residents with easy Internet access to basic legal information and resources. “It’s a unique resource for Georgians who need information, forms, and referrals to solve their legal problems,” says Phyllis J. Holmen, Executive Director of the Georgia Legal Services Program. Information on the site is available in more than a dozen languages as well. “Next to Spanish, the most commonly used language is Vietnamese!” said Holmen.
GLSP is Georgia’s largest legal services organization that provides access to justice and opportunities out of poverty for Georgians with low-incomes. The non-profit organization provides services in 154 counties free-of-charge to eligible clients. GLSP handles no criminal cases. Just like the clients served by GLSP, the website itself is also a success story. Since going live in 2003, the site receives nearly a million page views per year.
Judges from The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences will determine the winners of The Webby Award. The 550-person judging academy comprises big names like “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, Miramax Films co-founder Harvey Weinstein, and Internet co-inventor Vinton Cerf. Online fans have until May 1st to cast their votes for LawHelp.org. Simply visit http://pv.webbyawards.com to cast your ballot. Winners will be announced on May 6th and honored at a star-studded gala in New York City on June 10th.
