Morehouse School of Medicine Hosts
Health Disparities Symposium
Atlanta – Each day, 3,400 people in America are diagnosed with cancer and another 1,500 die of the disease. In spite of advances in research, treatment, and outcomes, African Americans and other minority groups continue to contract and subsequently die from the disease in disproportionate numbers. The burden of cancer is undeniably greater for poor, ethnic minorities and the uninsured.
To help understand how, why and what’s being done about it, Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), in conjunction with the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer III (NBLIC), will host “Health Disparities Symposium on Cancer: Addressing the Issues,” Sept. 21-22 at the Atlanta Marriott Downtown.
The MSM mission is to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities and this symposium seeks to create strategies and forge collaborations that will address the issues of cancer disparities in the U.S. specifically related to African American and other minority communities.
“The keynote speakers for this symposium are outstanding,” said Daniel Blumenthal, M.D., M.P.H., NBLIC’s principal investigator. “But the symposium will be more than a series of presentations; it will offer a real opportunity for interaction and planning.”
The symposium’s keynote speakers are David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., Director, Satcher Health Leadership Institute, and Stephen Sodeke, Ph.D., Associate Director, National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University. Satcher will present, “A Right to Care,” on Monday, Sept. 21 and Sodeke will speak Tuesday, Sept. 22 on “Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities: Is it a Human Rights Issue?”
More than 100 attendees are expected, including public health practitioners, academics, faith-based leaders and community-based organizations, all gathering to exchange information and foster alliances that positively will affect cancer outcomes in the African-American community and the U.S. overall.
