Fred Thompson Leads GOP Race 25% to 20% For Giuliani
Clinton Leads Obama 29% to 26%

Perdue Job Approval At 55%
Chambliss Leads Jones and Cardwell In Senate Match-up
Congressional Approval At 19%

Strategic Vision, LLC, a public relations and public affairs agency, announced the results of a three-day poll of 800 likely Georgia voters. The poll has a margin of error of ±3 percentage points. In the poll, 368 (46%) Republican voters were surveyed; with 328 (41%) Democratic voters surveyed; and 104 (13%) Independents and other party affiliation polled.

The poll found that 55% of respondents approved of Governor Sonny Perdue’s job performance, with 37% disapproving, and 8% undecided. Senator Saxby Chambliss received a 50% approval rating with 39% disapproving, and 11% undecided. Senator Johnny Isakson received a 52% approval rating, with 36% disapproving, and 12% undecided.

“Both of Georgia’s Senators saw a decline in their job approval numbers which can directly be related to the immigration debate,” said David E. Johnson, CEO and Co-Founder of Strategic Vision, LLC. “This decline was most noted among conservative Republicans.”

In a potential Senate match-up between Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss and Democrat DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones, Chambliss led 55% to 31%; with 14% undecided. In a potential match-up between Chambliss and Democrat Dale Cardwell, Chambliss led with 56% to 28% for Cardwell, and 16% undecided.

“At this point, Senator Chambliss is well positioned for re-election and is particularly strong in South and North Georgia,” said Johnson.

President Bush’s overall approval was 35% approving, 51% disapproving, and 14% undecided. When asked if they approved of the President’s handling of the economy, 44% approved; 46% disapproved; and 10% were undecided. When asked if they approved of the President’s handling of the Iraq War, 31% approved; 55% disapproved; and 14% were undecided. When asked if they approved of the President’s handling of the war on terrorism, 48% said approved; 41% disapproved; and 11% were undecided.

“The President’s poll numbers are at the lowest since we have begun polling in Georgia,” said Johnson. “They are far below what one would expect in a Republican leaning state like Georgia and most noteworthy is the large number of Republicans who are breaking from the President.”

When asked if they favored an immediate withdrawal of United States military forces from Iraq within 6 months, 45% said yes; 41% said no; and 14% were undecided.

“The number of Georgians who favor a withdrawal from Iraq has increased each month this year and now for the first time a plurality favors withdrawal,” said Johnson.

When Republicans were asked if they viewed President Bush as a conservative in the mode of Ronald Reagan, 7% said yes; 81% said no; and 12% were undecided.

“The President continues to be in trouble with his conservative base as demonstrated by this question,” said Johnson. “Rank and file Republicans feel betrayed by the President and feel that he has deserted from the conservative path. Republican candidates now barely mention the President’s name and instead invoke the name of Reagan, yet as of now, none of the presidential candidates have yet been able to convince Republican voters that they fit the Reagan tradition.”

When asked if voters approved or disapproved of the way Congress is handling its job, 19% approved; 68% disapproved; and 13% were undecided. “For Democrats the good news should be that the President’s poll numbers are so low in a Republican leaning state like Georgia that it may affect Republican candidates, yet the flip side is that voters don’t approve of the Democratic Congress which could hurt incumbents like John Barrow and Jim Marshall,” said Johnson.

When asked if they believed Democrats in Congress had a better plan to resolve the Iraq War then President Bush, 17% said yes; 71% said no; and 12% were undecided.

“This question demonstrates that Iraq can be troublesome for Democrats as well as Republicans, with large numbers of Democrats not believing that their Party has a viable plan to end Iraq,” said Johnson.

When asked if they favored the immigration reform that would include both enforcing border security to reduce illegal immigration and that would allow illegal immigrants currently in the United States a path to citizenship, 23% favored such an approach; 59% opposed; and 18% were undecided.

When asked if they favored immigration reform, that focuses exclusively on exclusively on securing the border and reducing illegal immigration, 66% supported such an approach; 13% opposed; and 21% were undecided.

“Support for an enforcement only approach to immigration reform cuts across both Party’s lines,” said Johnson.

When asked if they thought Georgia was headed in the right direction or wrong direction, 55% said right direction; 33% said wrong direction; and 12% were undecided.

When Republicans were polled on whom they would support in 2008 for the Republican Presidential nomination, Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson received 25%; former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani received 20%; Senator John McCain received 11%; Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich 7%; Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney received 6%; former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee received 5%; Kansas Senator Sam Brownback received 4%; Congressman Tom Tancredo 2%; Texas Congressman Ron Paul received 2%; former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson received 1%; Senator Chuck Hagel 1%; former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore 1%; California Congressman Duncan Hunter 1%; and 14% undecided.

“This is the first time since we began polling in Georgia that Rudy Giuliani has not led the Republican field,” said Johnson. “Fred Thompson’s potential candidacy basically destroys the McCain, Gingrich, and Romney candidacies. Thompson does best among Republicans who describe themselves as conservatives, among middle-age voters, and in heavily republican counties like Gwinnett and Cobb. For Romney, the news is also ominous as the rationale for his candidacy has been that he was the conservative candidate, Republicans in Georgia as in other sates such do not seem to be buying that argument and are opting for Thompson.”

When Republicans were asked how important it was for their presidential candidate to be conservative in the mode of Ronald Reagan, 48% said very important; 27% said somewhat important; 6% said not very important; 10% said not important; and 9% were undecided.

“With 75% of Georgia Republicans viewing it as being important, that their presidential candidate is a conservative in the mode of Ronald Reagan, the key to victory in the primaries will be appealing to that constituency,” said Johnson. “At this time, Thompson appears to be persuading Republicans that he is that man.”

On the Democratic side, New York Senator Hillary Clinton led with 29%; Illinois Senator Barack Obama 26%; former North Carolina Senator John Edwards received 18%; New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson received 7%; Delaware Senator Joseph Biden received 4%; Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd received 1%; Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich 1%; and 14% were undecided.

“Edwards lost support while both Obama and Clinton increased their support,” said Johnson. “For Obama, the good news is that he is within the margin of error against Clinton and is the second choice of a majority of Edwards’ voters. Richardson, while still in the second tier, is the only candidate in that bracket who shows the potential to break out.”

When Democratic voters were asked what they most looked for in a presidential candidate, charisma, experience, or ideology, 36% selected ideology; 27% selected experience; 24% said charisma; and 13% were undecided.
